According to a 2017 report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Sri Lanka topped the ranking of countries with the highest number of suicide deaths in the world. By region, Europe has the highest suicide rate.

Suicide is believed to be the second leading cause of death, after road traffic accidents. In particular, severe depression is said to be an important cause that pushes people to take action to end their lives.

The WHO estimates that around 311 million people worldwide are affected by depression.

WHO also calls on governments of countries to tighten the trade of pesticides or toxic chemicals, in order to control people who can easily commit suicide at low cost.

The WHO report also highlights that the suicide rate in South Korea has decreased due to a ban on the use of pesticides introduced in 2011.

In addition, medical researchers also point out the importance of support and counseling to help patients treat mental illness.
